The “L” identifies 304L as the low-carbon version of Grade 304. Its reduced carbon content limits chromium carbide precipitation during welding, improving resistance to intergranular corrosion in the heat-affected zone. This makes ASTM A312 TP304L seamless pipe particularly suitable for fabricated piping systems involving extensive welding or applications where post-weld solution heat treatment is impractical. The material retains the general corrosion resistance, formability, and weldability associated with 304 stainless steel, while its seamless structure contains no longitudinal weld seam.
